Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.
Zechariah 4:6
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound; but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes: so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
John 3:8
The wind
The path of the wind is mysterious. We can hear it, especially when it passes through the leaves of trees. We can see the movement of the objects it moves or stirs, but the wind itself is invisible. The precise path of a gust remains a mystery.
Speaking to a Jewish leader named Nicodemus, Jesus uses nature to illustrate a fundamental truth, comparing the wind to the Spirit of God. Like the wind that blows, the Spirit acts on the earth in ways that often seem mysterious to us. No one can control it; it acts according to God's will, where and how it wills. Its work is to make Jesus Christ known to all who seek him. It is the Spirit who brings about the new birth that Jesus speaks of in this passage: “You must be born again” (John 3:7). To this end, it works in the hearts and consciences of human beings.
Like the wind, the inner workings of the Spirit of God in hearts are invisible. But we can see its consequences in a transformed life: when someone is born again through the action of the Spirit, their life changes! Now this Spirit, who led them to accept Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and to know Him as their Savior, dwells within them. It enables them to demonstrate concretely what the Bible calls "the fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness…
We all need to be born again, through the Spirit of God, by means of His Word. Have you experienced this new birth? Read the Bible!
