Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3
He also told this parable about people who were confident in themselves that they were righteous, and who despised others:
Two men went up to the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: O God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, nor also like this tax collector;
I fast twice a week, I give a tithe of all that I own.
But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift his eyes to heaven; but he beat his breast, saying: O God, have mercy on me, a sinner!
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
