I will instruct you and show you the way you should follow;
I will advise you, I will keep an eye on you.
Psalm 32:8
“I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go.” Here the Lord speaks, answering the psalmist’s prayer. Our Savior is our master. The Lord himself deigns to teach his children to walk in the way of integrity; his holy Word and the exhortations of the Holy Spirit guide the believer’s daily conduct. We are not forgiven to live according to our own desires, but to be educated in holiness and formed into perfection. Heavenly training is one of the blessings of the covenant that adoption seals upon us: “All your children shall be taught by the Lord.” Practical teaching is the best instruction, and thrice blessed are those who, though they have never sat at Gamaliel’s feet, though they are ignorant of Aristotle and the ethics of the schools, have nevertheless learned to follow the Lamb wherever he goes. “I will guide you with my eye.” "Just as servants mirror their master's gaze, and a nod or a wink is enough for them, so too should we obey our Master's every instruction, not needing thunderbolts to shake our incorrigible laziness, but being guided by whispers and gestures of love.
C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892)
